Seeing is believing, and if I didn't see it for myself last year I would not believe anyone would be brave enough or dumb enough to actually ride up this thing, But damned if they do and friggin' fast, too. The Freemansburg Motorcycle Hill Climb is a serious challenge on the AMA Pro Circuit. Riders go from a standing start and fly over three jumps on alcohol/nitro burning bikes on their way up a 500+ foot hill that goes near vertical at the top! One of the best things about this event is the laid back nature of it all. Be sure to bring a blanket and a picnic lunch (food vendors are also on site) to sit on the grass meadow at the base of the hill and watch the action. There is also a custom motorcycle show on-site. Admission is $15 per rider (kids under 12 are free) and bring some loose cash to drop on the typical motorcycle event vendors that are also there (best prices I've seen on basic leather vests). The ride out is long (approx. 2+ hours) and will involve some highway riding so as to get there with enough time to hang and enjoy the festivities (racing starts at 1pm), but I am working on a combination route to include some nice country blacktop, also. This is strictly a nice weather event - a cloudy, cool day may be enough to cancel, so be sure to check the hotline prior. There is a $.75 toll at the PA/NJ border on 78 so bring your EZ-Pass.

Once again we will ride through the Black Dirt Region of Orange County, but this time we will head north into the Shawangunk Mountains. We’ll briefly stop at two breath-taking overlooks, one facing west and the other facing east. The guardrails are low, the views are expansive, the roads rhythmically twist, and there are a few switchbacks along the way. My suggestion is that we save the sightseeing for when we stop. Then we will go through Minnewaska State Park and descend for lunch at one of the charming restaurants in New Paltz.

What better way to spend a Sunday than riding your bike to a place called Sparrowbush? We'll make our way up through the woods of Sussex County, head North along the Delaware River on the Jersey side, see a bit of Port Jervis and then go North again on Rt. 97 before turning up into the back roads of Sparrowbush. Lunch will be at a breezy spot along the Delaware banks before heading on home to reality.
